About

Description

Walkonomics is a brand that believes in a walkable future. With more than half of the world's population living in cities, this number is set to rise to 70% by 2050. In order for these densely populated mega-cities to function effectively, they must be walkable.

Walkable cities and neighborhoods not only reduce obesity and improve health, but they also boost the economy and reduce carbon emissions. Walkonomics is dedicated to making this walkable future a reality. Through the use of technology, tools, and communities, they create cities, neighborhoods, and streets that people genuinely want to walk in.

Their app for iPhone and Android enables urban pedestrians to find the most beautiful walking routes, which often include tree-filled streets and parks. Using open data from governments and OpenStreetMap, Walkonomics rates and maps the walkability of over 700,000 streets and footpaths. They consider factors such as road safety, ease of crossing, quality of pavements, hilliness, navigation, fear of crime, beauty, and fun factor.

The WalkoBot, an automated system, rates the walkability of streets using public datasets, although users are also encouraged to provide their own ratings to ensure accuracy. The team behind Walkonomics consists of experts in sustainable transport, retail location analysis, human geography, urban sociology, and software engineering. They have collaborated with organizations like the United Nations, Transport for London, and the Department for Transport to improve walkable street environments
