Description
The Watkins Museum of History, located in the heart of downtown Lawrence, has been a pillar of the community since 1975. Housed in the iconic 1888 Watkins Land Mortgage and National Bank Building, the museum offers an array of programs, educational resources, and activities that delve into the rich heritage of Douglas County. By connecting the past with current issues, the museum provides a platform for civic engagement.
Operated by the Douglas County Historical Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving local heritage, the Watkins Museum boasts changing exhibits that shed light on the people and events that have shaped our communities. As a member of the Douglas County Heritage Alliance, the museum collaborates with other historical societies to share resources and protect historic sites within the county. Additionally, the Watkins Museum is a proud partner of the Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area.
With free admission, the museum warmly welcomes visitors to explore its exhibits Tuesday to Saturday. Whether you're interested in public programs, family activities, or conducting research, the Watkins Museum of History invites you to engage, become a member, volunteer, or even sponsor their mission
