WBHI (Women's Brain Health Initiative) is a Canadian and U.S. As part of their mission, WBHI invests in groundbreaking research that focuses on meeting the specific needs of women. They have launched several groundbreaking initiatives that contribute to advancing the understanding of women's brain health. WBHI has created and provides funding for the world's first Research Chair in Women's Brain Health & Aging at the University of Toronto, led by Dr. Gillian Einstein. This ten-year initiative, in collaboration with the Canadian Institute of Health Research, aims to explore how midlife events impact women's brain health and the underlying reasons behind the higher prevalence of Alzheimer's disease in women. Additionally, WBHI supports the Sex & Gender cross-cutting theme of the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration and Aging (CCNA), a national research effort involving over 350 researchers and clinicians studying age-related neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. Each of the 19 research teams has a dedicated sex and gender champion who ensures the integration of sex and gender considerations throughout the project's duration. WBHI also funds various grants, initiatives, and projects related to aging, neurodegeneration, and stroke. Furthermore, they support an exploratory research project on memory, aging, and the long-term effects of hormone therapy in trans individuals. By promoting research that explores the why behind gender differences in brain health, WBHI strives to contribute to the discovery of innovative solutions and ultimately better protect the brain health of women.
