# Webtrees

- **Website:** <https://webtrees.net>
- **Primary alias:** `webtrees.net`

## Description

Designed for genealogists and families, it lets users create a family tree, share it with relatives, and collaborate with family members around the world while retaining control over their data. The software runs on a user’s own web server and requires PHP and MySQL. It works with standard GEDCOM files, making it compatible with major desktop genealogy applications.

Users can customize their site with page modules, menus, charts, reports, and themes, including community-created options. The application supports more than 60 languages and a range of surname conventions, helping accommodate different cultural traditions. Flexible privacy settings allow users to manage access to family information at multiple levels.

webtrees is developed as open-source software and is available to download at no cost. The project provides documentation, installation and upgrade guidance, a developer area, community forums, and live demonstrations. For users without their own server or the skills to manage one, specialist webtrees hosting is also available.
