## Description

Arnegger Weethexen & Hansel e.V. is a registered carnival association based in Arnegg, Germany, with more than 100 active members. The guild brings together two traditional masked characters, the Weethexen (witches) and Hansel, who appear together in local streets and communities during the Swabian carnival season. The association also values its younger members, whom it affectionately calls its “Narrensamen.”

The group’s origins date to 1975, when the Wieland and Mattes families decided to attend the village carnival in matching costumes. Andreas Ochs, a skilled carpenter, carved the first three Hansel wooden masks, while Paula Mattes designed and sewed the costumes. A witch mask followed the next year, and Ochs continued carving masks until 1983. As interest grew, more carnival enthusiasts joined, and the guild became a registered association in 1998.

The name Weethexen refers to the nearby wetland known locally as “Wert,” or “Weet” in Swabian dialect, where the witch and Hansel are said to have first met.
