## Description

Wessex Week is a regional cultural event celebrating the history and heritage of Wessex through the centuries, with a particular focus on Malmesbury and the Anglo-Saxon period. Its annual programme brings together events featuring local history, archaeology, and culture, supported by speakers, volunteers, and enthusiastic attendees. The 2026 edition is scheduled for 10–17 October, with event listings and tickets available through the website.

Alongside its events, Wessex Week supports local organisations and heritage initiatives by directing profits towards community projects. Previous beneficiaries and supported activities include Operation Nightingale, the Shallow Grave Dig, the Big Dig for Athelstan 1100 in Malmesbury, the Athelstan Museum’s 1100 exhibition, and Flying Monk Community Radio. The organisers say profits from 2025 will help fund further archaeological exploration of Bird Cage Walk, ahead of a planning application for an Athelstan statue by the Aethelstan, First King of all England, Trust. Through its programme and grant support, Wessex Week connects the public with the region’s past while contributing to local cultural and archaeological work.
