## Description

The Wetlands Initiative (TWI) is a Chicago-based organization working toward a world with plentiful, healthy wetlands. Its mission focuses on the benefits wetlands provide for water quality, climate, biodiversity, and human well-being. TWI designs, restores, and creates wetlands, with projects and programs across Illinois, including the Dixon Waterfowl Refuge at Hennepin and Hopper Lakes, Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, and the Calumet Region.

The organization also advances Smart Wetlands, an effort to build wetlands in strategic locations where they can help clean water draining from farm fields. Its work includes nutrient credit trading markets, conservation partnerships, and public education about wetland value, ecology, and the loss of wetlands in the Midwest. Visitors can learn about wetlands through resources such as an educational infographic and the opportunity to ask a TWI scientist.

TWI invites the public to support its work through donations, workplace giving, e-news subscriptions, and volunteer events, which require no prior experience. At the Dixon Waterfowl Refuge, visitors can also plan seasonal paddling and fishing activities.
