## Description

**The Wolbachia Project**

The Wolbachia Project is a pioneering initiative dedicated to enhancing biology education by integrating real-world scientific research into the classroom. It empowers educators and students alike to engage in hands-on research that contributes to the Wolbachia research community, focusing on the fascinating bacteria known as Wolbachia, which live within arthropods. Through a structured lab series, participants explore local biodiversity, conduct DNA sequencing of potential new Wolbachia strains, and investigate their evolutionary relationships with existing genetic data.

The project aims to spark enthusiasm for science by fostering an immersive learning environment that spans from biodiversity studies to molecular biology. Participants not only acquire valuable research experience but also understand the scientific process firsthand. The Wolbachia Project encourages international collaboration and aims to enhance scientific literacy among students, making it an invaluable resource for aspiring scientists. Supported by esteemed sponsors such as Penn State Microbiome Center and NSF, this initiative seeks to cultivate a culture of scientific inquiry and excellence in education.
