About
Description
Western Reserve Historical Society, established in May 1867, is Cleveland's oldest cultural institution. Originally the historical branch of the Cleveland Library Association, the Society now focuses on the history of Northeast Ohio. Its collections and support grew rapidly, leading to its independent charter in 1892.
Today, the Cleveland History Center houses various exhibits, including Cleveland Starts Here sponsored by the Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Foundation, the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum, and the Chisholm Halle Costume Wing. The center also features two historic mansions, Kidzibits Playzone, and rotating exhibits. In addition to the Cleveland History Center, Western Reserve operates Hale Farm & Village, a living history museum, and Shandy Hall, available for tours upon request.
The Society's collections cover a wide range of topics, including pioneer settlement, immigration, family history, Civil War, decorative arts, genealogy, and automotive and aviation history. Northeastern Ohio's rich cultural roots are reflected in the Society's collections, which preserve the diverse histories and cultures of the region
