About
Description
WTO, or the World Trade Organization, is an international body dedicated to regulating trade between nations. Its core function revolves around the WTO agreements, which serve as the legal framework for international commerce and trade policies. These agreements are negotiated and signed by the majority of trading nations worldwide, and their aim is to facilitate smooth, predictable, and free trade.
The WTO has a multifaceted role, functioning as a global system of trade rules, a platform for trade agreement negotiations, a mediator for trade disputes, and a supporter of developing countries' needs. Key decision-making is carried out by member governments through ministerial conferences and the General Council. The organization boasts over 160 members, representing 98% of world trade, with more than 20 countries seeking membership.
The WTO Secretariat, consisting of approximately 650 staff, manages the organization's day-to-day operations. Financially, the WTO sustains its budget through contributions by its members, based on their share of international trade. With Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala currently serving as the seventh Director-General, the WTO emphasizes cooperation with other multilateral institutions and regularly publishes an annual report detailing its activities.
For those interested in working with the WTO, information on job vacancies, internships, and the Young Professionals Programme can be found on their website. Contact details, including general inquiries and copyright/trademark information, are also available
