The Zoo York Institute is a brand rooted in the vibrant culture of New York City. It all began in the 1970s, when a group of graffiti-writing skateboarders led by Mark 'Ali' Edmunds formed 'The Soul Artists of Zoo York'. They gained respect throughout the five boroughs for their daring acts, from bombing subways with spray paint to bombing hills on their skateboards.

By 1993, a new generation of New York City kids took over, determined to disrupt the California-centered skateboard industry. With the blessing of the original Zoo York crew, Rodney Smith, Eli Morgan Gesner, and Adam Schatz founded the first skateboard brand to proudly represent the city in its name. Beginning with skateboard decks and t-shirts from a gritty warehouse in Lower Manhattan, Zoo York quickly grew to become a global streetwear sensation, known for its iconic style.
