## Description

Życie za życie is an educational and commemorative portal of Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance, dedicated to Poles who risked their lives to rescue Jews during the Second World War. It presents the historical circumstances of the German occupation, when contact between Poles and Jews was forbidden and assistance could bring death to rescuers and their families. The site explains efforts by the Polish government in exile and the Polish Underground State to oppose the extermination of Jews, including the work of Żegota, the Council to Aid Jews established in 1942. Its content is organised around assistance, repression, personal accounts and documents, offering visitors several ways to explore this history. The portal also honours people who were murdered for helping, including the Kowalski family, killed by the Germans in Ciepielów in 1942. By bringing together historical information and records of individual experiences, Życie za życie seeks to preserve the memory of rescuers whose courage often went unrecognised during their lifetimes.
