About

Description

826 Valencia is a nonprofit organization that is passionate about supporting under-resourced students between the ages of six and eighteen. Our mission is to help these students develop their creative and expository writing skills, while also providing teachers with the tools they need to inspire their students to write. We understand that individual attention can truly make a difference in a student's learning journey, particularly when it comes to writing.

That's why we offer our services free of charge, ensuring that they are accessible to all students who may not have the opportunity otherwise. With three writing centers in San Francisco—the flagship location in the Mission District, one in the Tenderloin neighborhood, and a new center in Mission Bay—along with satellite classrooms in nearby public schools, we provide a diverse range of programs that cater to different age groups and needs. We believe that strong writing skills are crucial for future success, and that's why we're dedicated to cultivating wonder, inspiring imagination, and empowering students to express themselves confidently through writing.

Our impact has been so significant that we have expanded beyond San Francisco. In 2008, 826 National was founded to help other cities establish their own writing and tutoring centers. We are now proud to be one of nine official 826 chapters in the United States, inspiring similar groups worldwide.

We firmly believe that writing is a powerful tool for agency, self-expression, and community building. It allows students to tell their stories, process their experiences, and engage in critical dialogue. By equipping our students with strong writing skills, we empower them to access opportunities and make a positive impact on the world.

To learn more about our impact and our supporters, you can read our 2021-2022 Impact Report on our website. We are grateful for the generosity of individuals and groups who make our work possible. If you're interested in getting involved, whether as a volunteer, tutor, or intern, we have various opportunities available.
