About

Description

The Albany Institute of History & Art, founded in 1791, is one of the oldest museums in the United States and serves as the major repository for the region's heritage. With nationally significant collections, the institute houses a wealth of historical artifacts and artwork that document the life and culture of the Upper Hudson Valley region from the late seventeenth century. The genesis of the Albany Institute of History & Art traces back to The Society for the Promotion of Agriculture, Arts, and Manufactures, which was founded in New York City in Federal Hall and supported by the New York state legislature.

Over the years, the institute has expanded and renovated its museum galleries and facilities to meet twenty-first-century standards, thanks to a $17 million project undertaken from 1998 to 2001. In addition to its impressive collections, the Albany Institute offers a range of services and programs. Visitors can engage in public and school/group tours, explore current and online exhibitions, attend educational and family events, and join art classes.

The institute also provides library resources, including a catalog and collection finding aids, as well as volunteer opportunities. By connecting art and history, the Albany Institute continues to be a vital institution in preserving and sharing the cultural heritage of the region
