Description

The Carnegie Library of Homestead in Munhall, PA has a modern mission to enhance learning, wellness, and quality of life in the Steel Valley and beyond. Serving over 17,000 residents, it acts as a community activities center for youth, families, and the elderly in the Mon Valley. The library boasts an impressive collection of 3,000,000 county-wide items, including books, audiobooks, DVDs, CDs, newspapers, and magazines.


With nearly 7,000 cardholders and 230,000 annual visits, it offers a wealth of resources to the community. Additionally, 30 computers provide access to online services and learning programs, benefiting all residents, including those disadvantaged without home computers. The activities in the library are diverse, ranging from toddler and children story time, arts and crafts, and science and art classes for homeschooled children, to literacy outreach programs and book distribution at local preschools and daycare centers.


Teens receive homework assistance, and STEAM workshops such as robotics are offered in the Makerspace classroom. Book clubs, knitting classes, crafting workshops, and cultural programs like Russian language and psyanky egg decorating provide engaging opportunities for teens through seniors. Meanwhile, the Athletic Club offers a range of fitness activities, including Yoga, Water Aerobics, Spinning, Tai Chi, and Zumba classes, as well as a heated indoor swimming pool, gymnasium with a walking track, and indoor batting cages for baseball and softball training.


Year-round sports lessons and adult basketball and volleyball leagues cater to active individuals, while aquatics exercise and scuba instruction classes draw in 150 children and adults. Seniors can enjoy exercise classes tailored to their needs with the Silver Sneakers/Silver and Fit programs. The Music Hall, with a seating capacity of 1,045, retains its original, intimate atmosphere and attracts 40,000 patrons annually.


Visitors from Western Pennsylvania and across the country come to see nationally known entertainers in this unique venue. Whether it's American Idol, Little River Band, Boz Scaggs, or Jeff Goldblum, there are affordably priced tickets available. Moreover, the Music Hall serves as a community house, providing meeting space for local nonprofits and hosting events such as graduation ceremonies, naturalization ceremonies, school band concerts, church plays, and dance recitals.


Its year-round shows contribute significantly to the local economy, bringing over $1,000,000 in revenue to nearby restaurants, retail establishments, and hotels for every 50 shows held. By renting out space and generating ticket sales, the Carnegie Library of Homestead is able to support its facility and the various programs that benefit the community.
