Communities In Schools (CIS) is a leading community-based organization with a mission to empower children by providing them with a community of support. Their goal is to help students stay in school and achieve success in life. CIS goes beyond the classroom, offering resources and support that help students stay focused on graduating and realizing their full potential.


Founded by Bill Milliken in New York City in the late 1970s, CIS brings community resources into public schools, making them accessible, coordinated, and accountable. They believe that it is the relationships between adults and children that truly make a difference. Currently, CIS directly serves over 1.


26 million students and their families in more than 2,700 schools across 28 states and the District of Columbia. CIS operates on three core elements: unlocking potential, building relationships, and breaking down barriers. They help students see their potential and provide them with the resources and opportunities needed to overcome any barriers they may face.


By fostering transformative relationships and empowering students to address personal challenges, CIS is paving an equitable path to education for future generations. As a trusted and transparent organization, CIS is committed to financial stewardship. They have received recognition from the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance and maintain a four-star rating from Charity Navigator.
