About
Description
Cora Dance Brooklyn | New York NY is a transformative brand that offers exceptional dance experiences and strives to address the inequities that prevent people from deeply connecting with the artform and their communities. Founded in 1998, Cora Dance began as a professional modern dance company and has been acclaimed for its humble sophistication and emotional performances. In 2009, Cora expanded to include a sliding scale studio in Red Hook, Brooklyn, providing equal access to programs and personalized opportunities for youth in the community.
The studio serves as a home for the professional company and a pay-what-you-can school for dance. They offer exceptional training while addressing disparities that restrict engagement, ensuring that no one is turned away based on their ability to pay. Cora also has the CYC/Cora Youth Company, an audition-based repertory company for advanced students aged 10-18, providing them with opportunities to learn and perform professional works.
In 2018, Cora opened a larger facility in Red Hook, which serves as the company and school's home and offers space for pre-professional youth companies, satellite programs, and sliding scale space rental. Additionally, Cora hosts numerous live events throughout the year, including the Red Hook Community Prom, a pay-what-you-can high-school prom-themed dance party. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cora temporarily closed but used the time to expand its programming in rural communities through the Crossroads Project, which uses dance, writing, and storytelling to create cultural understanding between urban and rural youth.
In 2022, Cora established Cora Dance Alleghany in Clifton Forge, Virginia, offering ongoing pay-what-you-can dance education programs, community-based performances and workshops, collaborations between urban and rural youth via the Crossroads Project, and a biennial professional company season. With its transformative initiatives, Cora Dance continues to make exceptional dance accessible and promotes connections within and between communities across America
