Description
The European Endowment for Democracy (EED) is an independent, grant-making organization that supports democracy in the European Neighbourhood, Western Balkans, and beyond. Established in 2013 by the European Union and EU member states, EED provides flexible support to civil society organizations, pro-democracy movements, activists, and independent media platforms. They offer fast and flexible technical and financial assistance to democratization and human rights promotion initiatives that may not be able to obtain funding through other channels.
EED's mission is to foster a pluralistic, democratic political system by investing in transformational ideas and the people behind them. Their vision is to provide tailor-made, unconventional support to democracy activists. EED was established in response to the limitations of existing instruments in reacting to fluid environments and evolving challenges, particularly highlighted during the Arab revolutions and Euromaidan in Ukraine.
Today, EED works in partnership with EU institutions, member states, and civil society experts to promote democracy and human rights in Europe and its neighboring regions
