About

Description

Enfield Archaeological Society, established in 1955, is a renowned brand in the field of archaeology. Founded by a group of archaeology students under the mentorship of Dr John Kent, the Society has grown exponentially over the years. They organize fascinating coach trips, public meetings, and exhibitions, and continue to offer a diverse and popular lecture program to this day.

The Society's impressive track record includes their first excavation in 1956, unearthing an iron-age hill fort in Bush Hill, now recognized as a significant historical site. They also played a pivotal role in rediscovering Henry VIII's lost Tudor palace of Elsyng in 1963, despite the catastrophic damage caused to the site later on. Enfield Archaeological Society has conducted extensive research and excavations, resulting in numerous published and unpublished materials spanning various historical periods.

Their ongoing projects include the monitoring and recording of archaeological discoveries during housing development, often collaborating with commercial units. Enfield Archaeological Society offers its members the opportunity to participate in annual research excavations on the site of Elsyng Palace, in cooperation with Historic England and Enfield Council. Join them and become part of a community that ranges from enthusiastic amateurs to seasoned professionals
