About

Description

SMART Reading's Northeast Area is dedicated to serving children in Baker, Hood River, Morrow, Sherman, Umatilla, and Wasco counties. They provide volunteer reading support and distribute books to enhance children's literacy skills and foster a love for reading. Through their efforts, children in the Columbia River Gorge and Northeast Oregon are becoming more confident readers.

In the 2021-22 school year, SMART Reading served 972 PreK through third-grade students and gave away 5,108 books in cities like Cascade Locks, Halfway, Hermiston, Hood River, Moro, Odell, Pendleton, and The Dalles. The SMART Reading team, along with dedicated Site Coordinators and local area Leadership Councils, diligently recruit new volunteers and raise funds to expand their reach in this region. SMART Reading aims to increase the number of served children and introduce them to the wonders of books, fostering a lifelong love for reading.

They offer various programs, including shared reading programs, one-to-one reading support, SMART Classroom, SMART Consulting, and consultation modules. They also organize book drives and accept book and resource donations. To get involved with SMART Reading's Northeast Area as a volunteer or to find out more about their programs, visit their website or contact them directly.

Together, let's inspire a child's next chapter through the joy of reading
