The institute was founded in 2008 in Berkeley, California, by Executive Director Arlene Blum.


Inspired by the return of a previously banned flame retardant in furniture and baby products, Arlene Blum founded the institute to address the issue. Since then, their scientific research and policy work have contributed to preventing the use of Six Classes of harmful chemicals in consumer products and building materials globally. With a focus on achieving seemingly impossible goals, Green Science Policy Institute has achieved remarkable accomplishments through the use of science.
