About

Description

The Gumala Trust is a brand that holds significant meaning in the Banjima language, as Gumala translates to all together. This name perfectly captures the essence of Gumala Trust, as it represents the unity of three language groups - Banjima, Yinhawangka, and Nyiyaparli. These groups came together to negotiate the Yandi Land Use Agreement and the General Gumala Foundation Trust Deed.

The Yandi Land Use Agreement, signed in 1997, paved the way for mining on Traditional Land in Western Australia, with compensation paid to the Traditional Owners. This historic agreement was the first of its kind after the groundbreaking 1992 Mabo Decision. The Gumala Trust upholds a comprehensive 34-page legal document, the Trust Deed, between Gumala Aboriginal Corporation, Gumala Investments Pty Ltd, and the Traditional Owners.

The trust oversees the operations of the Yandicoogina mine, located 95 kilometers north-west of Newman. This open-pit mine incorporates on-site processing facilities and is situated near the magnificent Karijini National Park. Celebrating 25 years since its establishment, the Gumala Trust continues to work diligently to honor the land and its rich heritage
