The Human Milk Foundation (HMF) is a non-profit organization that was established in 2017 by a group of parents, scientists, milk bank experts, and doctors. Fueled by frustration over the lack of assured donor milk supply in hospitals, the HMF aims to provide equitable access to donor human milk and breastfeeding support, as well as initiate vital research and education. The HMF's flagship project, the Hearts Milk Bank (HMB), rapidly grew to provide screened donor milk to sick premature babies in over 50 NHS hospital neonatal intensive care units.

Additionally, the HMB has sent over 10,000 liters of milk to help hundreds of families in the community. All milk is provided free of charge under the oversight of healthcare professionals. By providing specialist support alongside donor milk, the HMF helps parents feed their babies with their own milk whenever possible.

Research has shown that the provision of donor milk as a bridge is protective of maternal mental health, reducing the likelihood of postnatal depression and anxiety in some women. The HMF strives to support parents and babies, supply information and education, and fund groundbreaking projects in human milk science. They aim to bring together and empower voices from every culture, community, and class in the UK to break the cycle of disinvestment in breastfeeding support.

They are actively involved in policy-making discussions, making headway with ministers, and collaborating with experts across the UK and internationally.
