The Historic Wilmington Foundation (HWF) is a renowned and respected brand in the field of historic preservation. Established in 1966, HWF has been dedicated to preserving and protecting the rich architectural heritage of New Hanover, Pender, and Brunswick counties. As a member-supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit, HWF utilizes various strategies to fulfill its mission, including a revolving fund, preservation easements, education, and advocacy.

With one of the most extensive plaque programs in the country, HWF honors the historical significance of the region through six distinctive plaques. The organization also offers educational programs, such as Tar Heels Go Walking, which provides educational tours for third graders in New Hanover County. Additionally, HWF operates Legacy Architectural Salvage, which offers a wide range of pre-1960s wood, doors, windows, and siding to help preserve the historic fabric of the area's structures.
