About
Description
The International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) is the leading community of ophthalmic professionals worldwide. As the only ophthalmology organization in official relations with the World Health Organization, the ICO represents and serves its members, including national, regional, and subspecialty ophthalmology societies. With roots dating back to the first World Ophthalmology Congress in 1857, the ICO has a rich history of advancing ophthalmic education and preserving and restoring vision for people around the world.
The ICO's mission is to enhance ophthalmic education, improve access to quality eye care, and promote vision preservation. They bring ophthalmologists and their teams together to learn, share knowledge, and inspire excellence and innovation. The ICO focuses on three strategic priorities: Education, Membership, and Advocacy.
Through their programs and initiatives, they provide resources and support for ophthalmologists at all career stages, foster a global network of ophthalmology societies, and create public awareness about eye health. Their flagship event, the ICO World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC), is the longest continuous international medical meeting, bringing together ophthalmologists and covering various subspecialties in ophthalmology. By leading collaborations and supporting partners worldwide, the ICO aims to strengthen eye care capacity and address pressing public eye health needs, especially in low- and middle-income settings.
