Description
Island Readers & Writers, located in Southwest Harbor, ME, is a brand that is dedicated to promoting literacy and encouraging reading. They offer a range of products and services to support their mission. Their programs include the Library of Congress Literacy Awards, which recognize outstanding contributions to literacy both in the United States and abroad.
These awards aim to draw public attention to the importance of literacy and serve as a platform to showcase innovative methods for combating illiteracy. Since 2013, they have awarded over $3 million in prizes to more than 150 institutions in 38 countries. The awards consist of three major prize categories.
The David M. Rubenstein Prize, valued at $150,000, recognizes organizations that have made exceptional and sustained contributions to increasing literacy levels. The American Prize, valued at $50,000, honors organizations based in the United States that have made significant contributions to literacy.
The International Prize, also valued at $50,000, recognizes organizations outside the United States for their efforts in increasing literacy levels in their respective countries. Additionally, successful literacy practices are acknowledged through the Successful Practices Honorees program, where up to 15 organizations are recognized for their implementation of effective literacy practices. By applying for these awards, organizations have the opportunity to receive financial support, gain public recognition, and join a community of past winners and honorees.
