About

Description

Komera is a dynamic brand that empowers young women in Rwanda through education, community development, and health initiatives. The name Komera translates to be strong, have courage, and that motto drives their mission. Komera provides comprehensive support for scholars, sponsoring their tuition, room and board, health insurance, and academic resources at public boarding schools in Rwanda.

In addition to academics, they offer intensive leadership and social entrepreneurship training during school breaks, nurturing young women's personal growth and development. Creating a supportive community is a priority for Komera. Scholars meet weekly with mentors and fellow scholars at school, while their parents and families engage with the Komera Parent and Guardian Cooperative.

Health and wellness are deeply ingrained in Komera's work. They focus on sexual and reproductive health programs, emotional support, and sports activities for both boys and girls. By promoting gender equality on the playing field, they use sports as a tool for confidence-building and teamwork.

Komera was founded in 2007 by Margaret Butler, who witnessed the need for education and leadership programs for young women in Rwanda. Since then, they have expanded their holistic support programs and hired a dedicated team of Rwandan leaders, led by Dativah Bideri Mukamusonera. Operating in a country with a painful history, Komera plays a vital role in rebuilding Rwanda's future.

They collaborate closely with the local government and community to uplift the region of Southern Kayonza, where residents primarily rely on subsistence farming and work at the local hospital. Through their transformative programs, Komera is developing the future female leaders of Rwanda, creating lasting change and hope for a brighter future in the country
