Affinity Biosensors is a brand that offers a unique and automated system called LifeScale for rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST). Powered by MEMS technology, LifeScale provides results in under four hours for the majority of Gram-negative species. This system is currently available for evaluation and pending FDA approval in the USA.

LifeScale-AST uses standard broth dilution sample preparation techniques, where samples are prepared in the same manner as the reference method and a simple centrifuge step is added to remove red blood cells. The system automatically measures the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for each antimicrobial on the panel. Once the species identification is confirmed, LifeScale provides a final report with both MIC and interpretive results, following FDA, CLSI, or local breakpoints.
