About

Description

MPRPD, or the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District, is dedicated to preserving and protecting the natural beauty of the Monterey Peninsula for residents and visitors to enjoy. With its ecologically diverse native landscapes, including coastal dunes, wetlands, rocky shorelines, redwood canyons, and more, the region is a major attraction. Established in 1972 by the voters of Monterey County, MPRPD has successfully protected approximately 14,000 acres of open space while maintaining balanced budgets and minimal overhead.

The district has acquired or helped acquire 24 parks and open spaces, including the recent acquisition of Palo Corona Ranch, the gateway to Big Sur. The district's mission is to acquire and maintain open space for preservation and use, working with partners and the community for public benefit, enjoyment, and environmental protection. The vision is to have several large, well-managed parks throughout the district, representing a variety of habitats and providing recreational and environmental education opportunities.

MPRPD is governed by an elected Board of Directors and serves a service area covering over 500 square miles, including the Monterey Peninsula, Carmel Valley, Pebble Beach, and the Big Sur Coast. With a commitment to providing safe and accessible open space for recreation and the protection of natural resources, MPRPD invites residents and visitors to explore and enjoy the stunning beauty of the Monterey Peninsula.
