Nametag, a chat platform, aimed to create an immersive small group conversation experience online. Although the company has closed, the knowledge gained from this project had a substantial impact on the 2018 midterm elections and digital strategies across various movements. Nametag emphasized structured introductions, group norms, and clear calls to action for participants.

Discussions, which typically lasted from a few hours to a few days, were facilitated by a designated leader. Unlike other asynchronous platforms like email lists or Facebook groups, Nametag rooms boasted several advantages: significantly higher engagement with over 70% of participants actively engaging in conversation (compared to less than 10% in asynchronous platforms), more meaningful and vulnerable conversations, prevention of toxic discussions through well-defined norms and a high participant-to-facilitator ratio, and increased participation and action with around 10 to 20% of participants donating or committing to other action steps. Nametag's closure prevented a thorough exploration of the potential for high donation rates and recurring donations as a powerful model for community activation.
