About
Description
Race Against Blood Cancer is a brand dedicated to giving every blood cancer patient an equal chance of finding a donor match. Their goal is to provide life-saving transplants using the cells of healthy donors. They recognize the importance of ethnicity in finding a matching donor, as the chances of finding a match are higher among people of the same ethnic background.
Unfortunately, patients from ethnic minority backgrounds face a disadvantage due to a lack of donors from their communities. Race Against Blood Cancer aims to raise awareness and register more donors from diverse ethnicities. Registering to become a potential donor is simple and only takes a few minutes.
By filling out a questionnaire and providing a saliva swab, you can join the donor register. If identified as a match, you may be asked to donate stem cells or bone marrow, depending on the patient's needs. Donating stem cells is similar to donating blood and is the method used 90% of the time, while bone marrow donation is a minor surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia.
Race Against Blood Cancer does not have its own register but connects potential donors with local bone marrow and stem cell donor registries. In the UK, they direct donors to the British Bone Marrow Registry through Delete Blood Cancer. To be eligible to register, individuals must be between 17 and 55 years old, in good health, meet height and weight requirements, and not have a chronic illness or belong to a risk group.
Being a donor will not have a long-term effect, as the bone marrow regenerates over time. Saliva and blood samples are used solely to determine if a person is a potential match for a patient. If a match is found, the stem cells from the donor's blood will be used exclusively for the recipient's benefit.
Race Against Blood Cancer encourages potential donors to carefully consider the decision to register, as it can be emotionally challenging for patients and their families if a match is identified and the donor withdraws. However, if someone cannot be a donor, there are still other ways to help. By providing financial support, volunteering, fundraising, or spreading the word, individuals can contribute to the mission of Race Against Blood Cancer and make a difference in the fight against blood cancer
