SAFE, also known as Services to Abused Families, Inc., is a nonprofit agency founded in June 1980. It was established as the Women's Abuse Shelter by a group of concerned citizens. The organization recognized the need for providing services to abused women and their families.

The shelter was initially operated by volunteers until 1984 when the first paid staff member was hired. In 1986, the name changed to Services to Abused Families, Inc. (SAFE) to reflect the range of services offered to all family members affected by violence.

Over the years, SAFE has grown significantly and now operates in Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange, and Rappahannock counties. They provide free and confidential services including shelter, support, advocacy, and counseling to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Their mission is to provide hope and assistance to those in need, regardless of age, race, gender, or faith.
