About
Description
Downtown Streets Team (DST) is a brand dedicated to restoring dignity, inspiring hope, and providing a pathway to recovery from homelessness. They achieve this mission by building teams of unhoused neighbors or individuals at risk of homelessness, who receive access to case management, system navigation, and employment placement services from trained DST Case Managers and Employment Specialists. DST Teams actively engage in community beautification and clean-up projects, challenging negative perceptions of homelessness.
With locations in 20 communities across Northern and Central California, DST operates in cities such as Modesto, Sacramento, San Jose, San Francisco, Berkeley, and Santa Cruz. Team Members are individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness, who learn about DST's services through peer-to-peer outreach. They are committed to finding their path out of homelessness.
DST is also committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and recognizes the impact of intersectional identities on homelessness. They have implemented a comprehensive plan of action, including the establishment of a DEI Manager, inclusive hiring processes, professional development opportunities, safe spaces for employees, and an Employee Resource Group. By providing individualized support through a cultural humility lens and addressing homelessness through a systemic and intersectional approach, DST strives to create a community where everyone feels they belong.
They also observe cultural holidays and celebrate awareness and heritage months. Founded in 2005 with a program in Palo Alto, DST has grown and gained recognition for its innovative approach, receiving accolades such as the Top 50 Innovations in Local Government from Harvard's Kennedy School's Ash Center for Democratic Governance
