Description

The Trustees of Reservations presents Ashley House, a historical landmark in Sheffield, MA, that unveils the fascinating stories of the Ashleys and the enslaved individuals who resided here in the 18th century. Discover the intertwined accounts of two contrasting figures who fervently fought for freedom and liberty, ultimately impacting the history of our region. Once a prominent hub of white social and political life, the Ashley House now holds significance as the place where Elizabeth Freeman, an enslaved woman, triumphed over slavery, leaving an indelible mark on Massachusetts.

As part of the Upper Housatonic Valley African American Heritage Trail, this colonial-era dwelling, owned by Colonel John Ashley, was among the earliest European-style structures constructed in the Berkshires. While Col. Ashley attained immense wealth and influence, amassing 3,000 acres of land and engaging in various businesses, his success was rooted in the abhorrent institution of slavery.

Despite publicly advocating for equality and independence during the American Revolution, Col. Ashley owned and profited from the enslavement of at least five individuals and the international slave trade. Elizabeth's groundbreaking legal battle for emancipation at the Ashley House in 1781 not only secured her own freedom but also paved the way for transformative change.
