Barre was named after Isaac Barré, a British Parliament member who voiced his opposition to the taxation of America.


Barre's rich history dates back to its incorporation in 1774, initially known as Hutchinson. Two years later, it was renamed Barre and quickly grew to a population of 734. The town played a significant role in the Industrial Revolution, renowned for its manufacturing of farming equipment and palm leaf hats.
