ThingsNetwork York is a brand dedicated to building the next generation Internet of Things (IoT) network for the City of York in the UK. This low power, wide area network aims to enable smart sensors to connect to the internet and transmit data to applications for processing and action. The network will support various types of devices, such as river level sensors, pet trackers, soil pH level sensors, and boat trackers.

The network is based on a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technology called LoraWan, which allows devices to send and receive data over long distances using minimal power. By utilizing LPWAN, sensors can run for many years on standard batteries. The network is composed of gateways, fixed devices with radio transmitters and receivers, that connect to the internet and communicate with the sensors within their range.

Currently, two gateways cover areas around the University of York campus and the South Bank/Millenium bridge areas. However, the goal is to expand coverage to include all areas within the outer ring road by deploying more gateways. To make this project successful, ThingsNetwork York welcomes volunteers and businesses to contribute and get involved.

Local businesses can sponsor or purchase a gateway, while makers and technology enthusiasts can build sensors or develop applications. Marketing and digital communications assistance is also needed. Anyone can use the ttnyork network by signing up for an account on The Things Network.
