About

Description

Urban Ed Academy is a non-profit organization dedicated to narrowing the achievement gap by increasing the number of Black and Brown male teachers in classrooms. Their mission is to build equity in education through representative leadership in and around schools. They envision a future where every student in San Francisco has at least one Black male teacher before sixth grade.

Urban Ed Academy was founded with the goal of inspiring excitement for learning in young boys of color by matching them with mentors who looked like them. They started with the SMART Saturdays program, which introduced over 800 boys in San Francisco to STEM project-based learning experiences led by Black and Brown men. However, they recognized the need for more representation and full-time classroom teachers of color.

To address the challenges of teacher shortages, lack of culturally responsive training, and the housing crisis, Urban Ed Academy has been investing in innovative solutions since 2018. They work with education institutions, nonprofits, foundations, and the government to break down systemic barriers to Black male teacher representation. If you're interested in supporting their work or learning more about their programs, you can visit their website and explore their annual reports and research reports.
