About

Description

The Vilna Shul is Boston's Center for Jewish Culture and the only surviving landmark of the city's immigrant Jewish history. Located in one of Boston's most historic neighborhoods, this 100-year-old building serves as a compelling destination for urban adult populations to deepen their Jewish identity and foster new relationships. It offers a sense of connection and belonging, bringing together people who share a profound yearning for their roots.

Founded by immigrants from Vilnius Gubernia, Lithuania, the Vilna Shul is a testament to their bravery and determination to build a new life in America. The majestic spiritual home they created features rare, multi-layer murals that serve as remarkable examples of 20th-century immigrant folk art. These murals evoke a time when immigrants, while embracing their new lives, continued to hold onto their old country's traditions.

After years of disrepair, a dedicated group of Boston leaders undertook the task of restoring the building, replacing the roof, rebuilding the windows, and installing new systems to make the Vilna Shul habitable and safe. Today, it stands as a registered museum, celebrating the rich diversity of Boston and giving voice to the histories and experiences of the city's immigrants and newcomers. Through educational programs, community events, art exhibits, historic tours, and collaborations, the Vilna Shul provides a platform for cultural expression and connection.

It invites individuals to explore the intersections of Jewish heritage and contemporary life, inviting all who enter to be a part of its vibrant community
