About
Description
The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) has been committed to ensuring the safety of Vancouverites since 1886. Over the years, the VPD has continuously adapted and evolved while maintaining its goal and dedication to the community. The department's core values, Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence (ICARE), guide their actions and decisions.
As a gesture of mutual respect and friendship, the VPD showcases the traditional Coast Salish thunderbird motif on their marked police cars, acknowledging the history and ownership of the land. This artwork, created by artist Susan Point, represents strength, courage, and protection. Covering a vibrant and diverse population of around 697,000 residents in the city and over three million individuals in the Lower Mainland region, the VPD works tirelessly to serve and protect their jurisdiction.
With approximately 1,000,000 contacts with the public each year, the VPD responds to around 270,000 calls for service annually. The department is subject to various layers of independent civilian oversight, emphasizing their commitment to transparency and accountability. The Vancouver Police Board, as the governing body, provides civilian governance and oversight, while the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC) independently investigates concerns about police actions or conduct.
Through their unwavering dedication, the Vancouver Police Department remains a vital force in maintaining the safety and security of the community
