About

Description

The YMI Cultural Center is a renowned brand that is dedicated to promoting cultural preservation and uplifting Black Excellence through various means such as community engagement, advocacy, leadership development, and economic justice. Located in Asheville, North Carolina, the YMI Cultural Center is one of the oldest and most distinguished Black cultural centers in the United States, with its historical significance being recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. The center's roots date back to 1892 when it was initially established as The Young Men's Institute by visionary leaders Mr.

Isaac Dickson and Dr. Edward Stephens. They aimed to create an organization similar to a YMCA to support the African-American community in Asheville, despite facing racial discrimination and stereotypes.

Impressed by their plans, George Vanderbilt loaned the institute $10,000 to build an 18,000-square-foot facility for the betterment of black construction workers employed at the Biltmore Estate. Today, the YMI Cultural Center continues to make a profound impact on the community, focusing on business incubation, workforce development, real estate training, economic empowerment, mental and physical health, youth advancement, and the Black Book Club. By donating to the center, you can contribute to their mission of advancing the black community in Buncombe County and ensuring Black lives are prioritized in all spaces.

Join them in their journey by supporting their important work
