**Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing**
The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at re-establishing ecological connectivity in the Santa Monica Mountains ecosystem. With research highlighting the dangers that roads like the 101 Freeway pose to local wildlife, this project seeks to bridge fragmented habitats for animals such as mountain lions, bobcats, and birds, which are at risk of genetic isolation and extinction. Spanning over 10 lanes of traffic, this crossing will be the largest of its kind globally and the first in California, serving as a vital link between protected lands.
Beyond just a construction endeavor, the wildlife crossing is part of a broader conservation strategy endorsed by both state and federal initiatives to preserve biodiversity. The extensive efforts over the past thirty years by organizations like the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy have laid the groundwork for this transformative structure, which promises to benefit wildlife for generations. Additionally, the project is featured in the upcoming documentary "Lion Bridge," showcasing the urgent race to save local mountain lions and their habitat.
