401contemporary is a renowned gallery for contemporary, international art in Berlin. Founded by Ralf Haensel in March 2009, the gallery aims to provide young artists with a spatial and temporal platform for exhibiting and connecting with other artists across generations. With a clear-cut and coherent gallery profile, 401contemporary brings together emerging and established artists, fostering new interpretations and stimuli for all involved.
In 2010, the gallery relocated to Potsdamer Strasse, a vibrant hub of art creation and trading in 1920s Berlin. The historical significance of this area, shaped by the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall, has significantly influenced the artistic output of the city and the positioning of the gallery. 401contemporary seized a unique opportunity in 2011 by showcasing the 'Baumann & Fuchs' exhibition in the villa and atelier of Anton von Werner, former imperial court painter and first Director of the University of Visual Arts.
This immersive experience intertwined elements from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, providing a rich context for young artists to define their artistic paths. In 2018, the gallery evolved into the Boiler#Art#Room in collaboration with Annette Kaiser. This open platform acts as a virtual showroom, stimulating high-level international art and cultural projects that are inter-medial, experimental, and controversial
