About 5 Minute Beach Cleanup
5 Minute Foundation is a brand dedicated to eliminating plastic pollution in the world's oceans through education and action. Since its inception, the health of our oceans and beaches has been their exclusive focus. They have developed inspiring programs and engaged millions of people, ranging from grassroots environmental groups to large-scale corporations, in taking action for the benefit of the planet.
The foundation was started in 2016 when Carolina Sevilla created the Instagram account "5 Minute Beach Cleanup" to educate her followers about the impact of plastics in the ocean and encourage them to clean their local beaches for at least 5 minutes. Within a year, the account gained a significant number of followers and their videos went viral with over 20 million views. Today, their movement and social media presence continue to expand on a daily basis.
In 2018, Carolina partnered with global entrepreneur and filmmaker, Mauricio Cortés, to establish the non-profit organization, 5 Minute Beach Cleanup Foundation. The foundation aims to immediately reduce human impact on the environment, educate future generations about sustainable consumption and the elimination of single-use plastics, clean beaches, and mobilize communities to facilitate marine ecosystem regeneration.
The team behind the brand includes Carolina Sevilla, the founder and president, who has a background in diplomacy and textile engineering from her role as Director of Operations at BIONIC. She is joined by a board of advisors, including Ingrid Shank, Mauricio Cortes, Iside Sarmiento, Francis Vincent, Gabriel Bolaños, and Maria Farah Guier.
