Asakusa Naniwaya is a taiyaki shop in Asakusa, established on December 17, 2010, as an independently handed-down branch of Naniwaya Sohonten in Azabu-Juban, known as the originator of taiyaki. The shop carries on the original establishment’s traditional flavor and serves taiyaki made one at a time using the traditional icho-yaki method. Each cake is cooked over high heat with a crisp, thin shell and a gently sweet red bean filling. The filling is made from Hokkaido Tokachi azuki beans, slowly simmered for eight hours in a copper pot and kneaded by hand to bring out the beans’ flavor.
Visitors can also enjoy shaved ice made with carefully selected ingredients, fluffy ice, fresh fruit, and sauces slowly reduced for a balanced sweet-and-tart taste. The shop has a tea room where guests can relax and enjoy its sweets. Its drinks include sencha from Nagasaki, hojicha from Nara, and coffee from Gunma, selected to pair well with the red bean desserts.
