About AACL
The Albanian American Civic League (AACL) is a vital non-partisan organization based in Washington, D.C., dedicated to advocating for the rights and concerns of over 750,000 Albanian Americans and the approximately seven million Albanians residing in the Balkans. Established in 1989 by former Congressman Joe DioGuardi, the league was founded in response to the humanitarian crisis triggered by the Balkan conflicts, particularly the invasion of Kosovo by Serbian forces. Alongside DioGuardi, Shirley Cloyes DioGuardi serves as the Balkan Affairs Adviser, enriching the organization with her expertise in foreign policy and human rights.
The AACL is committed to influencing U.S. foreign policy to promote peace and stability in the region. Through lobbying efforts and educational initiatives, the league has collaborated with prominent U.S. lawmakers to champion independence for Kosovo, equal rights for Albanians in Macedonia and Montenegro, and democratic development in Albania. Their affiliated entity, the Albanian American Foundation, furthers these goals by educating the public and government officials about Albanian history and culture, including their role during the Holocaust.
