Australian Astronomical Optics (AAO) is a scientific instrumentation, software and research organisation at Macquarie University. With expertise built over decades and more than 100 projects delivered since 1974, AAO develops integrated precision systems that support astronomy, space projects and research. Its work brings together visible and infrared optics, optomechanics, electronics, control systems, data acquisition and analytics, supported by systems engineering and professional project management.

AAO’s capabilities span bulk and micro-optics, fibre optics, photonics, mechatronics, sensors and detectors, cryogenics, software, and data management. The organisation designs and builds scientific instruments, develops software, and provides data management and related services. Its projects include optical and infrared instruments, adaptive optics, astronomical data platforms, space systems and satellite payload optics. Examples highlighted by AAO include MANIFEST, MAVIS, GHOST, HERMES, Hector and the Malya thermal camera.

The organisation works with an international network of collaborating institutes to address complex technical challenges.
