About AARL
The Association of Artisans of the Lisbon Region (AARL) is a nonprofit organisation founded in 1982 to protect and promote crafts as cultural heritage, pass on traditional arts and trades, and support artisans and their economic and social contribution. Based in Lisbon, it serves around 600 members across Portugal and is one of the country’s most representative artisan organisations.
AARL provides ongoing classes, workshops and short courses in a wide range of skills, including ceramics, pottery, embroidery, weaving, sewing, drawing and painting, bookbinding, macramé, tile painting, and the conservation and restoration of ceramics and furniture. Its member-run shop displays and sells work by dozens of associated creators. The association also organises markets, exhibitions and temporary shops where artisans can present and sell their products, including events held under its registered Artesãos de Lisboa identity. This mark identifies locations, events and products made by artisans using manual techniques. Through training, retail and public events, AARL helps sustain traditional skills while giving craftspeople opportunities to connect with audiences and customers.
