The Abegweit Conservation Society is a Canadian registered charity and an arm of the Abegweit First Nation, dedicated to protecting and enhancing Prince Edward Island’s natural resources. Guided by Mi’kmaq cultural knowledge and an ecosystem-based approach that also values science, the Society works to connect people with nature and encourage Islanders to steward the land, water and air for future generations. Its programs include environmental education, habitat improvement and community conservation initiatives.
The Plamu’k na Kitapina’q (“Salmon are our Friends”) Program helps participants learn about wild Atlantic salmon and other fish in local rivers and the ocean, drawing on an adapted curriculum from the Atlantic Salmon Federation. The Society also carries out practical stream restoration, including installing brush mats in North Lake and Midgell to collect silt and help rebuild stream banks and improve water flow. Through its work, the organization supports preservation, protection and enhancement of natural environments while fostering awareness of the relationships between people and the island’s ecosystems
