ABIEMMECI ODV is a volunteer association supporting children with acute and chronic, disabling illnesses and their families at the Niguarda hospital in Milan, Italy. Its name refers to the Association of Parents and Friends of the Chronically Ill Child at Niguarda Hospital. Founded on 14 May 1986 by parents connected with the hospital’s paediatric department, it was officially recognised as a nonprofit organisation in 2004. The association continues to work at the hospital’s Maternal and Child Health Department and Paediatric Unit.
ABIEMMECI’s purpose is to provide direct, personal and voluntary support within the healthcare and social care setting. Initially focused on psychological and financial assistance for families, it has expanded its activities in response to the needs of the paediatric department and its patients. Among its ongoing initiatives is funding a scholarship for a dedicated psychologist. Within the limits of its people and resources, the association also supports substantial projects intended to address the needs of a specialist centre for chronic childhood diseases.
