Ability Tech is an inclusive innovation organisation that designs and develops practical, smart assistive tools for people with disabilities. Its work supports people who rely on assistive technology, those who work with them, and others who want to contribute to accessible design and innovation. The organisation is currently developing solutions around self-driving wheelchairs, assistive robots, robotic arms and game controllers, while also exploring tools beyond these areas.
One featured project is a self-driving wheelchair for Andrei Fokkink, who plans to control it using his eye-operated computer. A working prototype has been developed, with the longer-term ambition of making the technology suitable for different wheelchairs. Ability Tech aims to help users gain greater independence and make everyday life more accessible.
The organisation also works to encourage innovation in the assistive technology sector, where useful developments can be slow to reach users. It seeks collaboration with educational institutions and the wider community, and welcomes contributions of expertise, creativity, materials and funding.
